HELPING – with the kiddos

I like children – for the most part. Sometimes they get a little whiney, sometimes they are quite disgusting, sometimes they are way too loud, but most of the time they are quite enjoyable. It’s a good thing too, because I’ve spent the past couple weeks with a bunch of kids.

My favorite Aunt, the one that I’ve spent a couple of weeks with every summer since pretty much birth, had to have eye surgery – and I, of course, went down to help her. She runs a daycare out of her home (a fabulous one, might I add) and by doctors order she wasn’t suppose to lift anything or bend over for at least ten days.

That’s where I come in – to do the heavy lifting, the bending, the playing, the chasing, the putting to bed, the changing of diapers, the running, the jumping, the giggling, the tickling, the general helping with the kiddos. There are 6 little ones in her care and they are quite adorable. All with there own small and sometimes quite large personalities, their questions and stories, their cries and their laughs.

My aunt is a pretty amazing women. To watch 6 children day in and day out, and not just watch – but to care for and nurture and inspire and teach – she is just fantastic. I sure couldn’t do it – not long term anyways.  No, two weeks was good for me. Don’t get me wrong, the kids were great. But even with great kids, it’s still exhausting. I was so ready to crack open that bottle of beer at the end of the day, to put my feet up and zone out to a bit of TV. I really admire my aunt, she has a strength I don’t possess.
