EXPLORING – where next?

Soon I will be journeying into the wild blue yonder, also known as British Columbia, Canada. Therein lies the first of my work exchange destinations (I work – they provide room and board). You may call me cowgirl, for that is what I will be. Far in the interior of BC, in an area known as Cariboo Chilcotina, I will be living the life of a ranch hand – doing some things I’ve never even dreamed of and getting up close and personal with some very large beasts. I don’t know how I’ll fair, but I’m going to give it my best go.

This will be the first of my Workaway adventures. Workaway is a website made up of hosts around the world who offer room and board in exchange for 4 to 5 hours of daily help on various projects. Workawayers pay their own travel expenses and are able to learn new skills and see amazing places, all while helping out local families and small organizations. It sounds like a win-win for everyone, and I am excited to explore this unknown territory.

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the pleasantest sensations in the world. – Freya Stark

My plan is to work my way across western and central Canada, stopping to visit friends and experience a few workaway adventures along the way. I hope to end up in Chicago by the beginning of October and make another plan from there.

I’ve added a new page to the blog titled – where is rene… – take a look! It’s a contact page of sorts; with info on how to reach me, a map of where I’ve already been and, of course, an up to date account of where in the world I am.

As I embark on this next stage of the journey I will again be relying mainly on the internet for communication. I hope you will keep in touch throughout my journey and that you enjoy reading about my adventures as much as I enjoy having them. Thank you for all of your support and comments thus far. Please keep them coming – I love to know what you think and I appreciate any feedback you may have.

Thanks for reading!

    • Thanks Mom! I’m not sure where the bravery comes from. I think people are brave in different ways, some more quietly than others. My bravery began to develop with that first solo trip to NYC – it was terrifying, but exhilarating, enlightening, and incredible too. I was just recently toying with the idea of writing a post about bravery and fear. You’ve given me the motivation to make it a reality. – Rene

  1. I love the photo perspective…is the grass intimidating? You’re tall….I know you will stride right through it!

  2. Thanks for the comment Kristen! Yes, this next excursion will allow me to check some items off the list. Along with the cattle ranch, I will also be helping at a white water rafting company and a dude ranch. So exciting! I can’t wait to tell you all about it. -Rene
