EXPLORING – the hills are alive…

…With the sound of music

With songs they have sung

For a thousand years…

Never have these words been more true for the little village of Savarsai, just two hours SE of Mumbai, than just recently. We had the great pleasure of helping to celebrate the opening of the new boys dormitory at the Child Haven International home in Savarasai with lots of song and dance from the children, adults, and guests alike.

The hills fill my heart,
With the sound of music
My heart wants to sing
Every song it hears

It is a small, simple dormitory but it was built well and with great care. Not only will it fulfill the government requirement of separate buildings for boys and girls, but it also alleviates the cramped situation that the children were facing in the original building.

My heart wants to beat
Like the wings of the birds
That rise from the lake to the trees

The festivities took place on a sunny sunday afternoon and extended well into the evening finishing with a lovely dinner under the full moon. The children were all decked out in their finest clothes, some of them sporting grand costumes for their greatly anticipated performances.

My heart wants to sigh
Like a chime that flies
From a church on a breeze

This small home is located in such an ideal setting. It is nestled into the lush hills, perched up above a small river, with a gentle breeze forever flowing through the surrounding trees. It is peaceful and serene and a wonderful contrast to the hustle and bustle of nearby Mumbai.

To laugh like a brook
When it trips and falls
Over stones on its way
To sing through the night
Like a lark
Who is learning to pray

I go to the hills
When my heart is lonely
I know I will hear
What I’ve heard before
My heart will be blessed,
With the sound of music
And I’ll sing once more.

My heart has been blessed more times than I can say during this trip. The Savarsai home is only the most recent on the long list of wonderful and caring people and beautiful and wondrous lands. I am so grateful to make this journey and so humbled to spend time with these extraordinary children.

Thanks for reading!
